Ben Wyvis
Ben Wyvis Just 15 minutes from the hotel - an excellent days hill walking can be had on Ben Wyvis. At 3000 ft Ben Wyvis in our nearest munro, a gentle climb rewarded with views from the north sea to the Atlantic. An easy walk in through forest at Garbat, followed by a steep ascent to summit plateau and then another easy walk to the summit. 4 and half hours 13 km The car park at Garbat lies between the public road and the forest. The route to Ben Wyvis goes from the car park along the main road for approximately 50 metres, over the bridge and the path is immediately on the right. Follow this well-defined path (running beside the Allt a' Bhealaich Mhoir) up to and across the forest road. About 0.75 miles further on, the path emerges onto open hill land belonging to Scottish Natural Heritage, with whose co-operation this path is being opened.
Midday on 28th January 2001. This is the view from near the summit of Ben Wyvis looking south-west along the ridge towards the Strathfarrar hills. The walk north-east along the ridge was mainly below a thin sheet of cloud that periodically thinned enough to get a view. The hills to the west; Fannichs, Beinn Dearg, An Teallach were under dark cloud all day, but to the south and east the cloud was well broken. The particular lighting conditions gave rise to the cool blue colour of the summit plateau. Picture and text courtesy of Gavin Shaw
